Fire Extinguishing Devices for Lithium Batteries

Lithium battery fires pose unique challenges because they can reach extremely high temperatures, up to +3000°C. Traditional powder extinguishing agents are ineffective in such fires as they lack the cooling effect and decompose rapidly under intense heat. Therefore, choosing the right extinguishing agent is crucial for effectively managing these high-intensity fires.

Extinguishing Agents for Lithium Battery Fires

The most effective extinguishing agents for lithium battery fires are water-based because water provides excellent cooling properties. Water mist, applied with high flow, has proven to be an effective method, especially for larger fires.

AVD (Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion) is a particularly effective solution – a water-based dispersion of chemically exfoliated vermiculite. AVD is applied as a mist and contains fine vermiculite flakes that significantly enhance the effectiveness of extinguishing lithium battery fires.

How Does AVD Extinguish Fires?

  1. Creation of a Protective Film:
The mist with vermiculite flakes forms a thin protective film on the burning surface. This film prevents oxygen from reaching the flames.

  2. Cooling the Combustible Material:
The evaporation of water results in intense cooling, slowing the combustion process and helping to bring the fire under control.

  3. Fire Stabilization:
The protective film strengthens at high temperatures, further isolating and stabilizing the fire.

This process effectively reduces the spread of flames and allows for the safe management of the fire.

Why Use Specialized Extinguishing Agents?

Standard extinguishing agents cannot handle the intense chemical reactions that occur in a lithium battery fire. Using specialized agents like AVD minimizes the risk of extinguishing failure and protects surrounding areas from secondary damage.

Equipping with the correct extinguishing agent is essential wherever lithium batteries are stored or used—whether in households, industrial spaces, or vehicles.
